NYX MYSTIC PETALS PALETTE REVIEW

There are two Mystic Petals palettes available - Midnight Orchid & Dark Mystic. I have Midnight Orchid, which is a gorgeous selection of warm toned rosy shades and cool toned violet shades. I've been looking for a palette with unique tones of pinks and purples for so long, so I'm very happy it finally exists!

I recently purchased this palette from the NYX store in Union Square, New York City for $12. I highly recommend checking out the NYX store if you ever have the chance - there's a huge selection of products (often many that aren't available in other stores yet!) at a lower price than many other retailers. It's one of my favorite stores to visit in the city!

This palette is made up of ten different shades - 3 matte and 7 metallic. The mattes have the perfect amount of pigmentation so that you don't apply too much at once and can easily build up the color. The metallic shades are so beautiful and have the perfect amount of sparkle and some even have a duo chromatic shift. The metallic shades are densely packed so I prefer to apply these with a brush for the best color payoff. If you swatch or apply these shadows with your finger, it won't have the same color impact as it does with a brush.

Since there are no shade names in this palette, I numbered every shade in the photo below so you can follow along with my review and descriptions easier!

1 // taupe with a metallic finish - perfect shade to use if you're looking to create a more neutral eye look with this palette without using any of the brighter shades

2 // warm toned mauve with a matte finish - pressed pigment - one of my absolute favorite shades in this palette! - easily buildable

3 // warm toned cranberry with purple sparkle and a metallic finish - pressed pigment - one of the most pigmented shades in this palette upon first application - one of my favorite and most used shades!

4 // cool toned plum with a metallic finish - pressed pigment - I typically don't use darker shades like this, but this is so beautiful and has grown to become one of my favorites!

5 // cool toned icy lilac with a metallic finish - has a light blue duo chromatic shift - very sheer and not as pigmented as the other metallic shades in the palette - works best as a topper for some of the darker shades or as an inner corner/browbone highlight

6 // warm light brown with rose undertones and a matte finish - will work best on lighter skin tones - one of my most used shades, it pairs so perfectly with all of the shades in this palette - I love to mix this with shade 2!

7 // hot pink with a satin finish - pressed pigment - very sheer and not as pigmented as the others are, which is surprising since this is a pressed pigment - can be built up when applied with a brush - overall not the best quality, but the color itself is very pretty

8 // periwinkle with a matte finish - this shade is what initially drew me to this palette! - it's so unique and adds something so different to my makeup collection - best used when applied with a dense flat eyeshadow brush for the most true-to-color and pigmented application - can take longer to blend out, but this shade is so beautiful, so it's worth taking the extra time with it!

9 // cool toned violet with blue sparkle and a matte finish - pressed pigment - this reminds me of a single eyeshadow I loved years ago from Ulta that I haven't been able to find a dupe for until now! - the blue sparkle adds such a beautiful flare to this shade when it catches the light - one of the most pigmented in this palette

10 // cool toned blackened berry with a metallic finish - I never use shades like this, but it applies and blends nicely - I personally liked using this as an eyeliner to define my upper lid

NYX is a vegan brand, which means most of their pink, red, and purple eyeshadow shades are formulated without carmine or any other ingredient derived from animals. This means that the eyeshadows are actually made with pressed pigments, which are not intended for use in the immediate eye area and can potentially irritate or temporarily stain the skin. Shades 2,3,4,7,9 in this palette are pressed pigments, as indicated in the shade-by-shade description and photo above. This is my first time using a palette with pressed pigments, but this is very common for vegan formulations. Brands like Colourpop, Jeffree Star Cosmetics, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Wet n Wild and Morphe are just a few brands that come to mind that use pressed pigments in most of their palettes. I personally have sensitive skin, especially around the eye area, and haven't experienced any irritation with this formula - but it varies from person to person. If you never used a pressed pigment before, I recommend doing a patch test on your skin before applying it in the immediate eye area. Like I said, this is very common for eyeshadow formulations, but I wanted to share all the information I know about this in case maybe you were unaware!

Overall, I absolutely love this palette and it has really added something so different and special to my makeup collection. In my opinion, a lot of eyeshadow palettes released this year have all kind of started looking the same and the makeup industry is becoming oversaturated with the same thing over and over. I love that NYX came out with something as original as the Mystic Petals palettes - while still also being able to appeal to a wide range of makeup lovers.

These shades are so versatile for any occasion and any time of year. You can create looks that are bold, pastel, smoky, or neutral - this can be used in so many different ways. I also love to pair this palette with some of the others in my collection, like the Flower Beauty Sugar Rush palette.

Overall, Mystic Petals Midnight Orchid has become one of my all-time favorite palettes over the past few months. If you like pink and purple-toned eyeshadows, then this palette will be perfect for you - I highly recommend this palette to anyone interested!
