"Spring Into Summer" by Lizzy McAlpine // Song Review

As always, Lizzy's intimate storytelling shines through in the lyricism, beautifully depicting the emotional transitions that this song represents. "Spring into summer, and the winter's gone, I try to hold on to it, but the current's too strong, somebody finds me in the state I am, love you like I mean it when I know I can't," she sings in the opening lines. It sets the tone for the emotional journey of trying to hold onto these fleeting moments even if they are slipping away. The final lines also stand out as a beautiful and bittersweet reflection, "Summer is falling, it's a distant dream, if I turn around, you're runnin' back to me."
It is featured as the final song off of the deluxe edition of her third album Older (and Wiser), released in 2024. Like much of the rest of the album, "Spring Into Summer" is a stunning showcase of Lizzy's signature singer-songwriter sound that incorporates folk and alternative rock influences. She wrote it while on tour, drawing initial inspiration from a voice memo of the lyric "gone, I hold it, the river is too strong". She ended up writing the rest of the song on tour with her band and an hour after they finished it, they performed it for the first time at their show in Boston.
At its core, "Spring Into Summer" is about the act of letting go, embracing change and stepping into a new stage of life, even when the future feels uncertain. It's a stunning showcase of Lizzy's emotive and confessional storytelling, weaving nostalgia, longing, and hope with the inevitable passage of time.
