Oops!...I Did It Again by Britney Spears // 25 Year Anniversary Album Review & Urban Outfitters Exclusive purple + metallic gold swirl vinyl

Oops!...I Did It Again is the iconic sophomore album by Britney Spears, released in 2000 as the highly anticipated follow-up to her legendary debut ...Baby One More Time. Following the massive success of her debut, there was definitely a pressure for Britney to replicate its impact. To achieve this, she teamed up with a range of producers and songwriters, primarily Max Martin and Rami Yacoub, the masterminds behind many of the era's biggest hits, including key tracks from her debut.

This album is stacked with timeless pop classics that defined the early 2000s and solidified Britney as one of the most defining voices of the era. While it had elements of the bubblegum pop sound from her debut, it also incorporated subtle R&B and funk influences, which added depth and variety to its sound.

The title track, "Oops!... I Did It Again", is undeniably one of the greatest pop songs ever written and remains a staple in Britney's discography. Much like her breakthrough single, "...Baby One More Time", it follows a similar trope, yet it manages to feel fresh, serving as a rare sequel that not only works just as well but arguably surpasses the original in terms of quality. The title itself is kind of funny in that way, as Britney and her collaborators didn't just replicate her success with the lead single; she elevated it, proving she was far more than a one-hit or one-album wonder.

Its chorus is one of the most iconic in pop history: "Oops, I did it again, I played with your heart, got lost in the game, oh, baby, baby,' she sings. "Oops, you think I'm in love, that I'm sent from above, I'm not that innocent". The song's music video is equally legendary and forever cemented in pop culture history for so many reasons.

One of the unique moments of this song comes at the bridge, which pays homage to Titanic with a spoken word interlude referencing the Heart of the Ocean necklace that was pivotal to the 1997 film. "Titanic was obviously big and we needed a bridge," Rami told The Ringer in 2020. "Because MTV was so massive at the time, we were always imagining the video as we wrote the song. The idea was pretty simple: Let's make the bridge have a Titanic reference where Britney gets the stone from the old lady."

"Stronger" stands out as a massive highlight on this record, as well. It is an empowering anthem of resilience, with an iconic callback to her breakthrough hit with the chorus, "My loneliness ain't killing me no more." The song radiates so much confidence and showcases the growth since her debut.

Another standout is "Lucky", which went on to be another one of the album's biggest hits and a bittersweet reflection on fame. In retrospect, knowing what we do now about Britney's journey, "Lucky" feels even more poignant, almost like a glimpse into what she was truly experiencing at the time and not just written from the perspective of a fictional movie star character. "And they say, 'She's so lucky, she's a star', but she cry, cry, cries in her lonely heart, thinking, if there's nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night?" she sings.

Beyond the massive hits, Oops!... is filled with incredible deep cuts that often get overlooked in conversations around some of Britney's best work. These tracks are quintessential early 2000s pop, some feel very much of their time in a way that's sweetly nostalgic, while others showcase Britney's versatility. Some standouts include, "What U See (Is What U Get)", "One Kiss From You", and "Can't Make You Love Me", the latter of which absolutely holds its own alongside the album's classics despite not receiving the same level of recognition.

The final song on the album, "Dear Diary", perfectly encapsulates the innocence of teenage years, offering a sweet moment reflection that makes it one of Britney’s most personal songs. It is also the first song she released that credits her as a songwriter, which adds an extra layer of significance to this time in her career.

Upon it's release in 2000, Oops!...I Did It Again quickly became a massive success. The album debuted at number 1 in 20 countries and sold 1.3 million copies in the first-week of sales, which held the record for 15 years as the fastest-selling album by a female artist and the largest first-week sales for a female album. It has now surpassed over 25 million copies sold and is among the highest selling records of all time. With this achievement, Britney became the youngest artist to have multiple diamond-certified albums by the RIAA.

In many ways, Oops!...I Did It Again is an even stronger album than Britney's debut, highlighting her growth and evolution in both sound and style. Packed with timeless classics, it was the album that solidified her place in music history and further laid the foundation for her lasting impact on the industry as a whole. Few pop stars have a catalog as stacked and influential as Britney's, and this album remains a shining testament to her legacy.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of this iconic album, it felt like the perfect time to share one of the prettiest vinyl pressings in my record collection! This special edition vinyl was released for the 20th anniversary of Oops!...I Did It Again in 2020 and was sold exclusively at Urban Outfitters. It was limited to only 5000 copies worldwide and is one of many re-issued Britney albums they sold around that time.

It is such a beautiful translucent purple with dark purple and metallic gold marble swirl. It is such a stunning pressing that perfectly captures the aesthetic of this album. Many of the other special variants Urban Outfitters sold around this time also have a similar swirly marble effect, which are all so beautiful as well.

It comes with a double-sided inner sleeve, which features photos, album credits and lyrics. I do wish it also had a gatefold jacket, but the other design elements make up for that.

Thanks for reading! I have Britney's entire discography (and more) on vinyl, so if there is a specific album or pressing you'd like to see me share next, be sure to let me know in the comment section below!
