"To Love" by Suki Waterhouse // Song Review
When Suki Waterhouse released "To Love" in 2023, she called it "...a very distinct portrait of my heart right now that I wanted to share." The song beautifully captures the rare and special feeling of finally finding your soulmate, of being understood by someone else on a level you didn't know was possible.
This song marked a noticeable shift for Suki, stepping away from her usual more melancholic tone that much of her music tended to gravitate toward up to that point. "To Love" is a beautiful ode to this stage of her life and the power of true love. It is deeply honest and so romantic lyrically. The production by her frequent collaborators Findlay and Jules Apollinaire is so cinematic and expansive, it is truly such a highlight in her discography.
"Is there a universe where our paths never crossed? Or where I caught your eye, but then someone arrived and we both forgot?" she sings in the opening lines of the song. "I traveled all corners where destiny called me and it almost killed me, but I got good stories, while you were out somewhere in your own nightmare, but now we're both here".
She sings of the separate journeys she and her partner have been on, all of the heartbreaks and detours their lives have taken. All along there was an invisible string that would eventually lead them to each other. In the pre-chorus she sings such a sweet and simple sentiment that really feels like the heart of what this song represents. "While the world's fallin' apart, you make it so easy to love", she sings.
"Is there a space somewhere in your world that was always for me?" is another lyrical highlight that is such a stunning expression of the feeling that this love was always waiting for you. She follows it later in the same verse with another soft sentiment, "But you told me right from the start I'm easy to love".
By the final chorus, she lets herself fully believe in the love she's found. Suki sings, "Now I found myself this kinda love I can't believe it, I'll never leave it behind, I thought I'd never get to feel another fucking feelin', but I feel this love, this love, this love". She sings it with such powerful, glowing energy, a complete embodiment of this overwhelming, almost disbelieving, feeling of being so deeply in love.
Released in early 2023, "To Love" was initially a standalone single and later found its home as the closing track on her sophomore album Memoir of a Sparklemuffin the following year. It's such a beautiful way to introduce the emotional world of the album and an even more beautiful way to close it out a year and a half later.
She ends the song with one final gorgeous lyric, "Oh, how lucky we are".
