"Add Up My Love" / "Slow Dance" by Clairo // Urban Outfitters exclusive 7" vinyl single
"Add Up My Love" and "Slow Dance" beautifully encapsulates the overall narrative arc of Clairo's third album Charm. Released as a part of Urban Outfitters' 2026 Valentine's Day vinyl collection, these two songs pair so beautifully on this exclusive 7" single. It is pressed on a baby pink vinyl, with an embossed front cover that features a line drawing of cupid and gorgeous typography. The attention to detail is evident with this release. It looks almost like a Valentine itself, which captures the aesthetic of the overall theme of the release so well. It was limited to just 3000 copies.
I love collecting Clairo's music on vinyl and am always so captured by the way the warmth and beauty of her music is translated into the physical releases. So much of Charm is rooted in beautiful, sincere love songs that are simply written, but also incredibly evocative emotionally at the same time. The track list sequencing of this record overall really does tell such vulnerable story of love and loss and everything that she gained from allowing herself to feel that much.
"Add Up My Love" is a true declaration of love, depicting her being finally ready to fully give herself to someone, but the other person can't reciprocate it back for her. "Honey, was it enough? Is it ever enough?" she sings in the chorus. All that's left now are the shadows of everything that they could have been together if it worked out and the memories that still linger on. "I remember when I see the moon" is such a vivid description of that fleeting love that is now gone. The ways in which the chords almost exactly match "Sexy To Someone" also feels very intentional and symbolic as well.
"That one was super fun to make, also kind of infuriating at times," Clairo said in an interview with Rolling Stone. "I was struggling with the sounds and how to make it weird enough. That's probably the one I had the hardest time with, because it's so openly pop that I was afraid it was going to skew the album a little bit pop."
"Slow Dance" similarly depicts an end of a relationship with the metaphorical candle burning out on the connection. She sings of the feelings of never being able to fully leave that person behind and move on from them. "When the moon begins to hide, it's not over," she sings in the opening lines of the song. "And the window turnin' light, does not mean goodbye". It is such a sweet song that captures the intimacy running through every moment on Charm."'Slow Dance' is one of my favorites," she told Rolling Stone. "I basically made a PSA in the studio being like, 'Please make some feminine music. Have a little femme in your step!' 'Slow Dance' is probably the most vulnerable song on the record. Charm is a lot about dating in your twenties and figuring out how to date. I know everyone talks about it being really hard." The final version that made it onto the album was largely recorded on her very first take in the studio, which captures something so unfiltered and instinctive. "Slow Dance" truly is the most real and immediate feeling of what she was going through in that moment.
The way she captures the feminine experience is so raw and so real, expressed with a distinct and articulated softness that never compromises in its honesty. The level of intention that shines through in the storytelling and emotional undertones that shape her perspective feel deeply personal to her, while also being undeniable reflective of something more widely and collectively felt.
