"Dead of Night" by Orville Peck // Song Review

"Dead of Night" is a song Orville Peck so vividly wrote about a fleeting romantic encounter in the middle of the night. It is evocative and nostalgic all at once, showcasing the depth of his voice in a way that immediately draws the listener into the universe he was setting forth with his debut album Pony.

The song in many ways carries a very sparse, classic country sound, but also a distinctly modern, psychedelic cowboy melancholy that has become synonymous with his music through the years. Through his music, he is able to simultaneously blend familiarity with an elusive tone in such a unique way. There is a very distinct sense of isolation and loneliness embedded throughout this song.

"This is a song about unrequited love. It's about being with somebody you know ultimately cannot give you what you want, and is only going to break your heart," he said in an interview with Apple Music. "But even just that is better than being without them, so you torture yourself with the inevitable demise."

It served as the slow and mellow opening to his debut album Pony, released in 2019, and was also the first song he wrote and produced for the record.

"I wanted to provoke the kind of sensation of torturous nostalgia. I think we all go through somewhere where you remember a moment and you think that thinking about it is going to torture you, but you do it anyway, because we have this weird human nature of putting ourselves through emotional pain," he added in the same interview with Apple Music. "That's kind of why I wanted the lonely guitar sound, and I wanted to go from very low to very high. I just wanted to give same feeling sonically that the emotion is about the song."

Over the years, "Dead of Night" became a defining song for film and television soundtracks, particularly in the second season of Euphoria, where it played a significant role in the narrative of two of the show's main characters.

The ways in which the passage of time and fleeting moments are depicted is just one of the elements that makes this song stand out as much as it does. The setting and the multiple interpretations the song can evoke is really so thought-provoking, allowing new layers to be uncovered with each listen. "Six summers down, another dreamless night, you're not by my side," Orville sings in the third verse. "Scratch on the moon like a familiar smile, stained on my mind, some other town, someone else's life".
