"Soup" by Remi Wolf // Song Review

"Soup" is written with a very distinct warmth and playfulness that is present across so much of Remi Wolf's work, but it also carries a deep vulnerability alongside it. The yearning at the center of the song is encapsulated in the repeated phrase in the chorus, "I don't wanna live without you," which becomes so central to the narrative it depicts. It's such a direct and simple sentiment, but it really anchors the entire song, shaping everything else around it in that way.

"I think typically in my writing, I'm able to express myself in like metaphors or in drastic imagery, or even just like shock value lyricism. And I think it allows me to like, hide behind something. Like, I'm the only one that knows the truth behind this song. And I think, in some ways, that excites me," Remi said in an episode of Song Exploder, decoding the meaning behind this song. She continued, "But I think, in some ways, I use it as a crutch. But there are times when we need to kind of let that go, and just lay it out on the table. So yeah, I think "Soup" was like a big step. Letting myself be seen a little bit more. Even people that are like really close to me, unless you’re like, really tightly in my heart, will I share like, these like nightmarish feelings, I guess, that I have at times."

In the same episode of Song Exploder, Remi gave more insight into time in her life that inspired "Soup". She said, "I was in a relationship at the time, and it was relatively new. And I think we had just kind of pushed beyond the honeymoon phase of it all. So it was starting to get really real. I was scared that I was going to be, like, too much for this person. That feeling of, am I enough? Am I able to control myself? And like, am I going to be able to, like, do this?"

Remi wrote "Soup" with the intention of it being performed live, wanting to create a big, anthemic song that she could imagine coming to life in front of an audience singing it right back to her. "I wanted to make something that felt huge, like it was created for a big space," she added in the same interview.

It was written with her collaborators after returning from tour at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, which is a setting that finds its way into the song itself lyrically with the first line of the chorus, "Doing business on the top of the roof". While the song is rooted in a time in her life that is deeply personal and specific, it also has the potential for a wider universal connection to be taken from it as well.

"'Soup' explores my relationship to commitment and follow through. If you ever really wanted to be there for someone fully but ended up getting drunk on a rooftop instead, 'Soup' is for you!" Remi said in a interview with Hashtag Magazine.
