"Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus // Amazon Exclusive 7" red vinyl + Song Review

Even though Miley Cyrus herself didn't write "Party in the U.S.A.", it still largely mirrors much of her own experience moving from Tennessee to California to achieve the American Dream and feeling homesick as she tries to find her place in the new city. In doing so, it also captures so much of her signature personality as well and is what she called an "all-American song" in a 2010 interview with MTV News

Since its release in 2009, the song has garnered an impactful legacy as one of the defining songs of Miley's career. In many ways, "Party in the U.S.A." had an interesting journey long before she ever recorded it. It was originally written with the intent of being included on Jessie J's debut album, but she decided to not record it as it didn't align with the style she was going for at the time. The song was meant to share her culture shock of being a British transplant moving to Los Angeles, which reflected in much of the scrapped lyrics that Jessie revealed in a 2025 interview.

The iconic opening that we know as "I hopped off the plane at LAX with a dream and my cardigan, welcome to the land of fame excess, am I gonna fit in? Jumped in the cab, here I am for the first time, look to my right, and I see the Hollywood sign, this is all so crazy, everybody seems so famous" was originally "I hopped off the plane at LAX with my tea and my cardigan, welcome to the land of fame and sex, am I gonna fit in? I jumped in the cab and the driver’s on the left side, look to my right and I see the Hollywood sign, oh my days, there's Macy's, everybody seems so crazy".

The changes that were made were intended to give the song a broader appeal, especially by omitting much of the specificity in Jessie's original lyrics. The final reworked version absolutely carries more of a timeless and universal feeling, and is a big part of why it can be interpreted in so many different ways. "In hindsight, I never would have been able to take it where Miley did," Jessie J told Glamour Magazine in 2014.

There was, at least in the first few years following its release, a distinct disconnect between Miley and the unexpected success of the song. Admittedly, she had never even heard a Jay-Z song up to that point either, despite her shoutout to him being an integral part of the song's hook. In a 2010 Q&A on her website MileyWorld, she added "I don't know, I didn't write the song, so I have no idea," she said. "Honestly, I picked that song because I needed something to go with my clothing line. I didn't write it and I didn't expect it to be popular, originally. It was just something that I wanted to do and I needed some songs and it turned out for the best."

Interestingly enough, the song was originally featured on her The Time of Our Lives EP, which was actually released as a Walmart‑exclusive project. They needed an extra track for the EP and decided to record the scrapped Jessie J demo to fill the gap. Once the lyrics were reworked to better suit Miley's audience, it was intended to be used as the commercial theme song for her Walmart exclusive clothing line with Max Azria.

Miley has said multiple times around this chapter of her career that it was not a song that was reflective of her personal artistic style, but she has seemingly come to embrace the song's impact, and her other early pop hits, in the decades to follow. "Party in the U.S.A." has seen many resurgences through the years for many notable American historical events that have occurred - specifically in 2020 when Biden won the election, Miley shared a video celebrating the win with the caption "Now THIS is a PARTY IN THE USA!"

What ultimately came from "Party in the U.S.A. though, is something no one could have expected. It became a celebratory anthem, not necessarily overtly patriotic in its own right, but for obvious reasons it has become what many deem as the unofficial National Anthem and the quintessential Fourth of July song every single year since.

In 2026, this song was released on a beautiful 7" translucent red vinyl single through Hollywood Records and Disney Music Emporium. This specific variant was sold exclusively through Amazon Music. The B side features the underrated gem "The Time of Our Lives", which is the title track of the project it comes from.

The packaging is also stellar for a 7" vinyl single, especially at this price point. It comes with a mini poster of the single cover, as well as a printed inner sleeve featuring the credits on one side and an iconic still from the song's music video on the other.

I love collecting Miley's music on vinyl and "Party in the USA" is such a crucial piece of her discography and legacy. This special vinyl was released just in time for America's 250th anniversary, which is such a fun way for any pop music fan to celebrate the milestone holiday.

As I'm posting this on the 250th anniversary of America and so many are celebrating, I wanted to take the time to highlight some important causes and charities that are actively fighting the injustices happening across the country every single day. Please take the time to read, support, and share these causes in any way possible. Feel free to share any others in the comment section below!
