"Run Away With Me" by Carly Rae Jepsen // Song Review

"Run Away With Me" is a euphoric song of free-flowing joy and wanderlust. The sense of escapism and romanticism that this song evokes is truly like no other. Right from its iconic saxophone opening, it was truly unlike anything else being made in mainstream pop at the time.

Widely regarded as one of the best songs of the 2010s, "Run Away With Me" has taken on a life of its own over the years. It also helped cement Carly Rae Jepsen as much more than just the artist behind "Call Me Maybe" - which is also a perfect pop song in its own right, of course. Both tracks have endured in different ways, but "Run Away With Me" remains a defining statement of who Carly is as a artist. While it wasn't the lead single from her 2015 album, E•MO•TION, it is the song that continues to stand out more than a decade later as a turning point in her career and a clear example of what makes it one of the most important pop albums of the 2010s.

Serving as the album's bold opening track, "Run Away With Me" sets the tone for the journey that follows. "Baby, take me to the feeling, I'll be your sinner in secret," she sings in the chorus. "When the lights go out, run away with me".

The creation of this song began with a simple saxophone demo before taking shape over the following months. Written and produced in collaboration with Noonie Bao, Oscar Holter, Shellback, and Mattman & Robin, the song evolved through several months of flying back and forth to Sweden for recording sessions.

The song's music video does an incredible job of bringing the emotions at the heart of this song to life. It was shot and directed by her boyfriend at the time, videographer David Larkins, during her 2015 press tour around the world. The video captures both the romantic and spontaneous elements of this song so beautifully. The concept originated from his idea; "Why don't I just shoot us... running away?"

Reflecting back on this song and shooting the video all over the world, Carly also told The Zach Sang Show; "I would do a show in Germany and then we'd get off and we would go and rent bikes. It's really documenting the romance as well as the crazy pace at which we were moving during that time. That song probably means the most out of all of them."
