"Secret Language" by Ryan Beatty // Song Review

"Secret Language" is a beautiful portrait of what it means to love before you can even put it into words. It feels so singular to Ryan Beatty's voice and artistic vision, especially in the way he writes with such specificity for his own partner, but still makes the feeling so much larger than himself in a way that can connect to anyone who has ever tried to capture such a specific form of emotional intensity.

The song's backdrop is rooted in stunning Americana imagery and sweet, poetic lyricism. There is a deep sincerity and openness in the way he expresses himself throughout all of Sweet Fortune, his fourth album this song is apart of, even though he often writes about how closed off he can be emotionally. "All the ways I say it in a secret language, did you hear what my words couldn't tell? I keep it all to myself," he sings in the beautiful chorus.

"It's an arms-open-wide song," Ryan said in an interview with Vogue alongside its release. "It's sort of like a proclamation. What I love about it is that the lyrics are about saying it in a secret language, but the song itself feels so big, and there's nothing secret about it."

He added, "I would say it represents sort of that first time you realize that you might be in something for real, but just right at the edge of when you can actually say it, or even have the words for it. But also how our love can show up in different ways - when you're not comfortable in expressing it, it shows up in ways that don't come from your words. And about overcoming a shyness to express new feelings. I think that, at that time in my life - and it's a practice I'm still working on - I really was overcoming that fear of letting someone in."

It was released as the first single off of his 2026 record Sweet Fortune, and the act of pre‑releasing a song before the full album is so different for him, which maybe in hindsight is something that was largely more indicative of the phase of life he found himself in while making this music as well. So much of his music up to this point has been written in a more melancholic tone, which is largely the opposite of the new beginnings represented throughout Sweet Fortune as a whole, and especially in the first glimpse listeners got with "Secret Language". Putting forward something new with a different approach is something largely represented in the music itself too.

"I like making bodies of work, albums that feel like you need to hear it beginning to end," he continued in his interview with Vogue. "And with this one, I wanted to start off scorching. This song feels like such a different start to how I previously started records - coming in a bit bigger." Ryan added, "I'd say that I was in a much happier place while I was making this record. I think making music and not coming from a place of pain while making it was a different thing for me."
