The Best Songs of September 2024 // New Music Friday!

"Talk Talk (Remix) // Charli xcx & Troye Sivan

In honor of Charli and Troye's joint SWEAT Tour kicking off this month, they released a new BRAT remix of "Talk Talk" which is so iconic! It also features a cute cameo from Dua Lipa at the beginning and end speaking in French and Spanish. I love that Troye really transformed it into a completely different song, but one that is still just as great as the original. Charli also finally announced the full BRAT remix album too, with every song from the original being reworked into something completely new and different. All of the remixes that have been released so far have been nothing short of perfection! Brat and it's completely different but also still brat is set to be released this October and I am veryyyyy excited to hear it!

"Ego" // Halsey

"Ego" is about Halsey breaking down the two sides of herself - Halsey, the popstar persona, and Ashley, the person she is underneath it all. She opens up about this internal battle she faces with these two opposite sides of herself, while also reflecting on her relationship with fame. This theme of transformation seems to be setting up the concept of the rest of the album really well too, which she announced earlier this month. The Great Impersonator is set to take the listener through the decades as Halsey imagines the artist she would have been if she were making music in the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's and early 2000's. It is such an interesting concept and one that I know is going to be such an emotional rollercoaster to listen to. "Ego" falls somewhere in the late 90's sonically, which in my opinion is a style of music that suits her so well. I already know that The Great Impersonator is going to be one of my favorite albums of the year and I am so happy it is set to be released SO soon!

"That's Entertainement" // Lady Gaga

Harlequin is yet another incredible depiction of the pure talent and versatility that Lady Gaga holds as an artist and performer. This album draws inspiration from her character of Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux film in a really unique way, most of them being classic jazz covers and show tunes, with a few original songs written for the film mixed in. Even if much of it isn't something I would typically listen to, it is masterfully performed and executed in every regard. "It's a Lady Gaga record, but it's also inspired by my character and my vision of what a woman can be", she told Rolling Stone. This surprise album serves as a companion piece to the film, which I am very excited to watch soon! Gaga is also set to release the lead single off of her upcoming seventh album in the coming weeks, with the full project to follow in February 2025 too.

"Like A River Runs (A Stranger Desired Version)" // Bleachers

A Stranger Desired is such a powerful depiction of the way grief can change and take new shapes with time, but will never fully leave you. No matter how much time passes, that person will always stay with you. In this case, that person will forever live on in the hearts of all who listen to this music and associate their own stories with it. "Like A River Runs" best represents that notion and truly feels like the heart of this album and all that Bleachers represents. To me, the new version of "Like A River Runs" is what makes the new re-recording all worth it to me. It was the first song Jack Antonoff wrote for the album and what he called the "mission statement" of the band many times. Much of Strange Desire is about trying to find a way to navigate this new world with their loved one not in it anymore and all of those emotions reach a peak on this song.

"I Destroyed Disco" // The Dare

"I Destroyed Disco" is one the severa; highlights for me off of The Dare's debut album What's Wrong With New York? I first discovered  him through his collaboration with Charli xcx on "Guess", as well as the iconic remix featuring Billie Eilish that was released soon after. He's one of my favorite new artists that I discovered this year, I love how his music is very much rooted in the New York club scene of the early 2000s, but with a modern electronic twist on it. His energy is so infectious!

"Cleats" // Finneas

"Cleats" is the fun and nostalgic second single off of Finneas' forthcoming sophomore album. I am really looking forward to hearing the rest of For Crying Out Loud! when it's released this October and I will also (hopefully) be seeing him live soon too at Billie's tour in NYC too!

"Legendary" // Suki Waterhouse

Suki Waterhouse's Memoir of a Sparklemuffin has been an album I have been anticipating the release of all year and finally it is here! There are so many songs that stand out to me from the album, but "Legendary" is one that has especially been on repeat for me the past few weeks. It's a really beautiful song that celebrates such a powerful love, which is great to hear especially after so much heartbreak that was explored throughout the record. Like much of the album, "Legendary" feels very reminiscent of Lana Del Rey's work and this song in particular feels tied to Lana's "Living Legend", which I also adore. Suki has released several of my favorite songs of the entire year and cannot recommend listening to her work enough!

"Midnight Cowboy" // JADE

I absolutely loved JADE's debut "Angel Of My Dreams" and have been anticipating what she would release next. On "Midnight Cowboy" she fully embodies the dazzling club vibe, very reminiscent of Beyoncé's Renaissance album. I have always loved her work with Little Mix and am loving hearing more from her with this new solo journey she's on. As always, I am looking forward to hearing more from her soon!

"we can't be friends (wait for your love) - acoustic (live from jungle city)" // Ariana Grande

Ariana's acoustic and live version of "we can't be friends (wait for your love)" so gorgeously showcases her lush vocals, which truly sounds so immaculate. No one else compares to Ari vocally. This is one of my favorite songs from Eternal Sunshine and this new version only further elevates my love for it.

"Somebody Else - Spotify Singles" // ROLE MODEL

As a part of Spotify's ongoing series titled "reblog", ROLE MODEL covered one of my all-time favorites, "Somebody Else" by The 1975. This series is meant to highlight artists of the Tumblr era (which is a time in music that I loooove) and everyone that has been a part of it so far has really made these classics all their own. I love ROLE MODEL's upbeat acoustic rendition of the song!

"Video Games - Spotify Singles" // Good Neighbours

Another great addition to the "reblog" Spotify series! Lana's music is obviously a staple of the Tumblr era and I have been seeing several artists cover her music for this series already. Last month Clairo released her version of "Brooklyn Baby" to kick off the series and now Good Neighbours covered the iconic "Video Games" too. Just as I mentioned with ROLE MODEL's rendition of The 1975, I love how they really made this classic song that everyone knows and loves into a version all their own.

"Hombre Roto" // St. Vincent

One of the most unexpected releases of the month is St. Vincent's Spanish version of her electrifying "Broken Man", titled "Hombre Roto". She is also re-recording the entirety of All Born Screaming in Spanish, which is set to be released in November.

"What A Girl Wants - 25th Anniversary" // Christina Aguilera & Sabrina Carpenter

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the classic "What A Girl Wants", Christina Aguilera recorded a new version for Spotify featuring Sabrina Carpenter. Their voices blend together so beautifully, and I absolutely love this reimagination of the original!

"Nobody Knows" // Shawn Mendes

Shawn has been taking his sound in a new direction with his recent releases, which is definitely a more soulful approach than what he has made prior. "Nobody Knows" is my favorite of the singles he's put out over the past few months and I especially loved his recent performance of it at the VMAs. I am looking forward to hearing more from him soon!

"Backup Plan" // Nat & Alex Wolff

Nat & Alex Wolff recently released the first single for what they called the "...cornerstone of our next musical chapter". "Backup Plan" is another great release from the duo and I am really looking forward to hearing more from them soon! I am also going to be seeing them open for Billie Eilish in just a couple of weeks in New York City, which I am beyond excited for!
