"What You Want" by Angéle & Justice // Song Review

"What You Want" is a bold electronic club anthem that serves as the perfect blend between Justice - the French electronic duo made up of Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé - and Belgian pop singer Angèle. It's such a seamless fusion of their two distinct sonic worlds, coming together in the most unexpected way.

The collaboration itself came together organically after meeting for the first time backstage at Justice's show in Brussels in late 2024. There was an immediate creative spark between them, and that connection was translated so clearly into this track. The energy and adrenaline running through the song, along with the sleek electronic production all collide to create such a dynamic listening experience.

"I went to say hi in their dressing room after their show, which I'd loved. It was the first time we met, and we talked a lot about our careers and our creative visions. I spontaneously suggested they come to the studio. We spent an afternoon listening to the demos I'd been working on on my computer," Angéle said in a press release alongside the release of the song, recalling the origin of her collaboration with Justice.

The early demo she had written, which eventually became "What You Want", was initially much more bare and raw than what it ended up turning into. Justice then transformed the production into something darker and more sensual, elevating the earlier version to new heights. These elements perfectly complement the airiness of her beautiful vocals and capture the intimacy that lies at the heart of this song.

"I had this track, 'What You Want,' a slightly sultry, sensual, offbeat song I'd written. But since I wasn't completely satisfied with it, I'd put it aside. I thought Justice could bring the electro-club expertise—and the tension—that were missing from that first version. After we met, I sent them the demo, and they came back with this version that I found absolutely brilliant. They understood everything! They brought a power to the track that the intention and balance had been missing. Bringing our worlds together without losing our identities—that's the greatest success of this song!"

The transitions between the French verses and the mostly English chorus also adds so much depth to the song too. "What you want, I'm only what you want, oh, baby," she sings in the chorus. "What you want, c'est pour la vie, dare to take me, oh, oui".

"I also love to mix English and French. It's a fun little game cuz these two languages really don't get along usually," she said in an interview with Genius: Verified, breaking down this song. "It's completely different. I started with like 'what you want'. I don't really know how I would have done that in French. It would have been different, but I also love to like bring a little bit of French just as a little reminder."

In the same press release, Justice added, "Making 'What You Want' with her felt as easy as it was natural. Although her music is different from ours, the track called for something sensual and brutal that we instinctively connected with, without compromise."
