run from the sunlight is a curated playlist I created to capture some of my current music obsessions. The title is inspired by a lyric from one of my favorite songs of the past year, "Dracula" by Tame Impala. His music has been on constant repeat lately, and I used that song in particular as a jumping off point to shape the rest of the playlist around.

Lately, I've been listening to a lot more electronic music, with sounds and synths that give off the same kind of vibe being the focus of this playlist. There are also a lot of longtime favorites that I love and felt naturally fit the theme as well. Tame Impala's music features heavily throughout, but other songs that shaped the direction of the playlist include "Stateside" by PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson, "Houdini" by Dua Lipa, "Dance No More" by Harry Styles, and more. 

Other artists featured heavily throughout include The Dare, Djo, Magdalena Bay, and more. I wanted this playlist to feel a bit more intentional and focused, so I kept it to around 50 songs rather than my usual expansive, longer playlists. Within that, I tried to feature as wide a variety of artists as I could and spotlight as much music as possible within this specific prompt and tone.

"Pool" by Samia // Song Review

"Pool", the opening track of Samia 's 2020 debut album The Baby , is a haunting and introspective introduction that sets the emotional tone for the rest of the project. It's a slow burn that focuses on fleeting intimacy in such a vulnerable way. While the rest of The Baby is more varied stylistically, "Pool" beautifully represents so many of the themes that recur throughout the rest of the album. The Baby feels thoughtfully bookended by "Pool" and the closing track, "Is There Something in the Movies?" as well. "party 4 u" by Charli xcx // Song Review

"party 4 u" by Charli xcx is a euphoric anthem of unrequited love, a song full of glittering synths and raw emotion. She sings about throwing an entire party with the hopes that just the one person she wants to see the most will be there - a very Gatsby theme that she translated so well into this song. It is featured on her 2020 album how i'm feeling now , which was largely created in isolation and released in the thick of the pandemic in May of that year. She worked with her frequent collaborator, A.G. Cook , on this song and the rest of the album. By the time the pandemic started, they only had about half of the album finished, so they decided to go with a DIY approach while finishing the rest of how i'm feeling now .  "party 4 u" had a much longer history by that point though, as Charli said in an interview with Apple Music. "No One Noticed" by The Marías // Song Review

"No One Noticed" by The Marías explores themes of longing for human connection and isolation in the digital age, while yearning for someone to finally see her the way a lost love once did. Lamenting for the past and what could have been she sings, "No one tried to read my eyes," she sings in the second verse, "No one but you, wish it weren't true". This song poignantly captures the distinct sense of isolation that comes from being surrounded by room full of people, yet still feeling completely alone, as well as the notion that others may never fully grasp the depth of your inner thoughts and struggles in those moments. It was featured as the eleventh track on The Marías' 2024 sophomore album,  Submarine ,  which was one of my favorite new music discoveries from last year. "Spring Into Summer" by Lizzy McAlpine // Song Review

Lizzy McAlpine 's "Spring Into Summer" is a beautifully written reflection on the cyclical nature of relationships, using the changing seasons as a powerful metaphor for love, regret, and personal growth. The song captures both the melancholy act of letting go and the hope that comes with stepping into a new season of life, embracing change despite knowing that the cycle will inevitably continue. It signals change after the darkness of winter, carrying a sense of warmth and renewal as summer approaches. At the same time, it carries this anticipation that the fall will eventually come again. As always, Lizzy's intimate storytelling shines through in the lyricism, beautifully depicting the emotional transitions that this song represents.
