"Hanging Out To Dry" by Florence Road // Song Review

"Hanging Out To Dry" is written as an act of self‑preservation when introspectively confronting yourself in the moment you feel yourself falling for someone you already know you shouldn't. Florence Road's breakthrough single from their 2026 EP Spring Forward is rooted in the desire to stay in denial and trying to convince yourself it's not worth the risk of being left out to dry, so to speak.

"This song is about trying to convince yourself that you aren't falling for someone because you know they won't treat you right," lead singer Lily Aron said in an interview with NME, breaking down the meaning of the song. "It's also about feeling underappreciated, like you're left hanging out to dry. I think a lot of the time you kind of accept what's happening, but it's kind of the start of realizing that maybe you should get out of there."

The song captures the inner battle of trying to be in denial about what you're feeling. It switches back and forth between the confidence in being able to resist and simultaneously succumbing to the inevitable feelings of uncertainty that come along with falling for someone new. "Trust me, I'm not falling, no supersonic heartbeats in the morning," she sings in the chorus. "Don't trust me, I might fall in, I never think about you at all". The way it builds into the explosive bridge and final verse, especially with the repetition of "Don't trust me, I might fall in," mirrors the unraveling of letting her guard down and confronting the resistance of not wanting to be left emotionally exposed when it's all over.

The band started writing it in January of 2025 and eventually came back around to it months later, reminded of how much they loved it. They finished it and included it on their EP the following year. They are such exciting, fresh voices in alt‑rock right now, and this track is a perfect example of why.
