"Soft Spot" by Claud // Song Review

Released alongside the announcement of their 2021 debut album Super Monster, "Soft Spot" continues to stand out as one of the project's highlights. The vulnerability and honest perspective in which they consistently write from is so distinct and beautifully represented on this song. It sits with the lingering feelings of not fully having closure on this chapter of their life and not being able to fully let the other person go as a result, even when they know they should.
"You made it clear that it's over now, but you're all that I think about, so now I don't know what the hell to do," they sing on the pre-chorus. What shines through the most is that there is a underlying hopefulness in the way they look back on their time together. Claud writes about so many sweet, specific moments they shared, with the second verse in particular standing out: "We used to lie in bed and talk for hours about everything and anything you said you wanted to," they sing.
In a comment to Coup de Main, Claud shared some insight behind the meaning of the song. They said, "...Sigh. I have a soft spot for lots of people, places, and things. This song is about knowing I can't be with this one specific person, but my feelings won't go away...I still hope I run into them, or they randomly text me about something. It's just me romanticizing what I can't have and being like 'but what if...'"
