The Best Songs of March 2024 // New Music Friday!
"Broken Man" // St. Vincent
One of the best songs of the entire year so far is the lead single from St. Vincent's upcoming album called "Broken Man". I love the industrial grunge direction she seems to be going in, this sound suits her so well and I cannot wait to hear more! I already know her new album is going to be a major contender for album of the year for me!
"Take Me To The River" // Lorde
I always know it's about to be a great day when we get new music from Lorde! As a part of A24's Taking Heads tribute album to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Stop Making Sense, Lorde released her cover of "Take Me To The River". This particular song also holds a lot of sentimental meaning for her too, as it was the very first song she ever heard from the band when she was 12 years old. She never misses with her covers and always finds a way to make them all her own. The lyric "Love is a notion that I can't forget, my sweet sixteen I would never regret" also coincidentally feels very representative and reflective of her own artistic journey too. I can't wait to hear more new music from her *hopefully* soon!
"eternal sunshine" // Ariana Grande
One of my favorite new releases this month was Ariana Grande's long-awaited album eternal sunshine! It has been on repeat all month and I think is even among her very best work yet. The album's title track "eternal sunshine" is absolutely one of the best songs and ties together the theme of the album so perfectly. This is where the concept of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind really comes into play and blends the events of the film and her personal life in such a perfect way. She is at her most vulnerable in sharing her deepest feelings of wanting to move on and wipe her mind of her ex. In turn, it also acknowledges that he likely wants to wipe his mind of her as well. In the chorus she sings, "I found a good boy and he's on my side, you're just my eternal sunshine". The storytelling is so strong and I definitely think it will go down as an all-timer in Ari's discography.

"I Am Right On Time" // Bleachers
Bleachers' long-awaited self-titled album is finally out and I have loved listening to it so much this month. So much of this album holds so much meaning and symbolism for me, so it was hard to choose just one to share for this list. Among my favorites from the album is the opening track, "I Am Right On Time", which sets the tone for the rest of the record in such a perfect way. So many songs on this album sound like an evolution of early Bleachers music and bring so many of the lingering questions full-circle now. One of my favorite lyrics from the entire album is from this song, "My mind is mirrors, don't know what is and what's reflection, the future's past, I'm right on time". The message of learning to let go of your regrets from the past and your fear of the future to just live for right now is so inspiring and really moved me.

"Shakes" // Luke Hemmings
I am so happy to hear that Luke Hemmings is coming out with more solo music! "Shakes" is such a deeply personal song with stunning atmospheric production. His 2021 debut album, When Facing The Things We Turn Away From, is such an incredible record and I loved getting to hear a different side of him outside of the band. Of course, I have always been the biggest fan of 5SOS and have loved getting to hear more from them collaboratively and now individually too. Luke is one of my favorite vocalists of all time and I can't wait to hear more from his upcoming EP, boy, at the end of April!
"Sway" // Kacey Musgraves
Every single song off of Kacey Musgraves' new album Deeper Well is so gorgeous and has been such a joy to listen to this month. I listened to it for hours and hours at a time and always just feel so comforted by it. Every song is very rooted in nature and has already become an essential spring and summer album for me, much like the way Golden Hour is too. One of my favorites is "Sway", which uses the imagery of a palm tree blowing in the wind. I have always loved palm trees, I even have a tattoo of one, so this song just really connected with me for so many reasons. It is so beautiful and simple, with the most gorgeous vocal harmonies. 🌴🪻
I'm currently working on my full review of Deeper Well, which I hope you will come back soon to check out!
"BODYGAURD" // Beyoncé
Beyoncé's new album, COWBOY CARTER is such a masterpiece from beginning to end and there were so many songs I debated putting on this list as my current favorite. It was so hard to choose just one! From the very first listen, I fell in love with "BODYGAURD" right away. I absolutely love the melody and her vocals are stunning, as always. It may be too soon to say, but I'm already thinking that COWBOY CARTER may be my new favorite album from her yet!
"obsessed" // Olivia Rodrigo
I have been so obsessed with "obsessed" ever since I heard it for the first time at the end of the GUTS vinyl in my collection. She finally officially released this song as a part of the deluxe edition of her album called GUTS:spilled, which features four songs that were previously vinyl exclusives and one brand new track. "obsessed" is such a fun song, it feels reminiscent of "bad idea, right?" and "brutal", which are two of my favorite songs she's ever done. It's about her obsession with her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend, which she continues to become more and more unhinged over her as the song progresses. It was also co-written with St. Vincent, who is one of my favorite artists and her influence is so prominent on this track, her writing is so effortlessly cool.

"Von Dutch" // Charli XCX
"Von Dutch" is such a fun and wild song! I am so excited for the rest of Charli's upcoming album coming this summer, she is so iconic and I have a feeling this album is going to be one of her best yet. I especially really love the music video too, it's one of my favorites in a long time!
"the von dutch remix with addison rae and a.g. cook" // Charli XCX, Addison Rae & A.G. Cook
This is how to do a really great remix! Normally, I wouldn't include the same song twice in one post, but since the remix of "Von Dutch" is so different than the original version, it only felt right. I love the addition of Addison Rae on this, she has been making really fun, pure pop music that is so needed right now! This is almost a completely new song, with new production and lyrics from the original version, so it is definitely worth listening to both. I hope Addison and Charli continue working together in the future - I would especially love to see them work together on Addison's eventual full debut album!
"Doctor" // Miley Cyrus & Pharrell
"Doctor" has been a well-known leak from the studio sessions Miley Cyrus and Pharrell worked on over ten years ago when they were making Bangerz. Over a decade later, it finally has gotten an official release! The production reminds me of some of my favorite songs like "On My Own" and "#GETITRIGHT" from Bangerz. The production also reminds me of "Blurred Lines" minus the grossness of that song. This is such a catchy song that reminds me a lot of the loose, carefree energy that Miley radiated during this time of her career.

"Lighter" // 5 Seconds of Summer, David Guetta & Galantis
5 Seconds of Summer recently released an unexpected collaboration with David Guetta and Galantis called "Lighter". I definitely would have much preferred for this song to be just 5SOS, as I'm not really a fan of EDM like this, but I always love to hear new music from them and appreciate the effort to try a new style of music. I can see this becoming a really fun song to listen to this summer though!
"I Cover The Waterfront" // Sam Dew
"I Cover The Waterfront" is a cover of a popular jazz song from 1933, which is featured in the Apple TV+ series called The New Look. Sam Dew has such a beautiful voice that fits this song so perfectly. It's among my very favorites from the soundtrack so far.
So far, I am loving all of the songs that are featured on this soundtrack, all of which are produced by Jack Antonoff. I shared many more in last month's New Music Friday - check it out here if you want to read about more of my favorites so far from The New Look.
