The Best Songs of April 2024 // New Music Friday!

"The Tortured Poets Department" // Taylor Swift

The entirety of The Tortured Poets Department is such a masterpiece, I can't even begin to express how incredible it all is! It's honestly still too overwhelming to even narrow down my favorite songs from the album so far and I have so many thoughts to share about it in my upcoming review. Until then, I thought it was fitting to first highlight the title track. It both captures the deep, raw emotions she was feeling at this moment in time, but also incorporating the hints of humor that are present throughout the entire album. It's a song that stood out to me from the very first time I listened to it and I haven't been able to get enough of it ever since. I still can't believe she released not one, but two, albums worth of music at once this month!

"The Manuscript" // Taylor Swift

Since Taylor technically released two albums worth of music this month, I feel it's only necessary to also include a current favorite from The Anthology side of The Tortured Poets Department too! Again, I am still so overwhelmed with trying to choose just a couple of favorites out of the whopping 31 songs on the album, so I went with the very final track, "The Manuscript". I definitely shed a few tears while listening to it for the first time, I feel it best represents who she is as an artist and her mission with the music she makes. This song in particular feels like her reflection on all of her past work, and the heartbreak that often inspired a lot of it. Regardless of what time in her life these songs are inspired by, once she puts them out into the world, these songs now take on a life of their own in the hearts of those that listen to them. That's truly the beauty of her songwriting, that everyone can take something different from it and find a piece of themselves in it. It is such a powerful way to end such an emotionally vulnerable album like this.

I have so many thoughts on this album and am still trying to figure out how to tackle it all in one review, so be sure to come back soon and check it out when it's up!

"Espresso" // Sabrina Carpenter

I'm already calling it - this is the song of the summer! After the success of songs like "Nonsense" and "Feather", I think Sabrina has really found her lane with releasing these super cute and catchy pop hits. Her personality really shines through in this song, I absolutely love it and haven't been able to get it out of my head! I have loved seeing Sarbina's music start to take off over the past year, she is such a talented vocalist and performer!

"B2b" // Charli XCX

"B2b" is just so addicting to listen to! This is probably my favorite of the three singles Charli has released so far, but I haven't been able to get enough of any of them. She has a such a talent of being able to write music that is lyrically simple, while still being able to turn it into a complex, innovative club classic. I absolutely love all of the songs she's released from brat so far and am sooo excited to hear more soon!

"Big Time Nothing" // St. Vincent

I am always so blown away by all of the music St. Vincent makes, she is such an incredible visionary. Her new album definitely didn't disappoint, I love all of the varied influences she drew from with each song and the narrative being told throughout. "Big Time Nothing" is such a lyrically captivating song from the album, with such a cool funky production style. All Born Screaming is absolutely a contender for my favorite album of the year so far!

"Benny" // Luke Hemmings

I have been a huge fan of 5 Seconds of Summer from the very start and always love hearing them experiment outside the band in their solo careers. Luke is one of my all-time favorite vocalists and have especially really loved his solo work over the past few years. In 2021, he released a stunning debut album, When Facing The Things We Turn Away From and have been eagerly anticipating a follow up to it ever since. His new EP boy is so beautiful, and I was particularly struck by "Benny" on my first listen. It's named after his brother, but really serves as a love letter to his entire family. It is so deeply honest and personal. I love hearing a new side of his artistry through his solo music!

"Illusion" // Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa's new album is finally coming out next month, it feels like we've been waiting forever for it! "Illusion" is the third song she has put out from Radical Optimism, which is another really great dance single from her. It has incredible production and is so much fun to listen to - plus the music video is so iconic too!

"Faded" // Suki Waterhouse

This month Suki released two new singles, "Faded" being one of the surprise tracks she released before her Coachella sets. It's such a beautiful song, looking back on a past love from years ago. I watched the livestream of her performing this song at Coachella a couple of weeks ago too and it only made me love it even more. Her upcoming album is among my most anticipated of the year, I hope she announces it soon! "OMG" still remains at the top of my favorite songs of the year!

"Good Luck, Babe!" // Chappell Roan

This month I finally started listening to Chappell Roan and she is such a talented up-and-coming artist! I love to see her having this big breakthrough moment right now, I especially loved her new single, "Good Luck, Babe!". A moment that really stands out to me is the bridge; it is so strong and masterfully written. She is such a fresh voice in pop music that is going to do great things in her career - I can't wait to hear more from her!

"Forget About Us" // Perrie

After Little Mix went on hiatus in 2022, I have been really looking forward to seeing what they release as solo artists. Perrie recently released her first solo track, which is a really fun and catchy song for the summer. It was co-written by Ed Sheeran, who of course is a hit-maker in his own right. His recognizable style of songwriting is very present on this track. I'm looking forward to hopefully hear more from her soon!
