they say people never change // playlist
they say people never change is a playlist built around songs that inspire growth and personal reflection, especially when looking at all of the ways we change over time. It is curated in a more personal manner than the conceptual or sonic themes I usually build my song collections around. There is still a particular through line across these 50 songs though, with each one reflecting some facet of growth or self‑reinvention. Some take that idea in a more abstract direction, others more literally, but together they form a portrait of what it means to evolve.
I felt inspired to share this playlist today because it officially marks nine years since I first posted on my blog. It's surreal to look back on how much time has passed since my first makeup review all those years ago, along with the hundreds of posts I've written since then for over a million readers! My writing has changed and evolved so much through those years, and I feel so much more confident in what it means to share my interests and opinions in the way that I do now. I can't believe it's nearing almost a decade since I started documenting my love of music, fashion, art and so much more.
I was 17 when I started this, just looking for a creative outlet to share my interests and perspectives with like‑minded people. All of my 20s thus far are documented here, and it's so special to be able to look back and see the music and experiences that shaped me in my early adulthood through very specific chapters of my life.
This playlist is also made up largely of some of my current and all‑time favorite songs and artists. The playlist title is derived from a lyric on Tame Impala's "Yes I'm Changing", which has been deeply inspiring me lately. I've always had the feeling that a particular song or artist finds you at the exact moment in your life you need it and will be able to fully connect with it, and that is exactly what this song is for me right now. "They say people never change, but that's bullshit, they do" is the full lyric that really captures the notion that we don't have to be pigeonholed as one thing for our entire lives, and pushes back against the idea that change is impossible.
Funny enough, I wanted to end the playlist with "My Old Ways" by Tame Impala as well, in a symbolic nod to the cyclical contrast life brings. This playlist is bookended with "Yes I'm Changing" by Tame Impala and "Change" by Djo, alongside "Slither" by Djo and "My Old Ways" by Tame Impala, which feels mirrored in their respective structures. I am also seeing both Tame Impala and Djo live for the first time ever today as well - so all of this felt very aligned in that way to be sharing this collection of songs that has been shaped so significantly by both of them. I largely wanted this to feel like a celebration of (just some) the music that shaped me, especially over the past year.
Thanks for reading and for your continued support of my writing, it truly means so much to me that anyone takes the time to read my thoughts on music and the parts of myself that I share here. There is so much more to come and I can't wait to see what the next nine years brings! ★
